In From the Cold is DL Jenkins' Cold War story for Pictura Fragrans, told as a memory: two physicists' daughters meeting across a snowy Soviet courtyard as the era ended, and a friendship that outlived it. Snow, spearmint, black tea and hyssop open it cold and steaming; the heart moves indoors with tuberose, old books, buttered toast and steam; cedar, opoponax and rice pudding settle it warm.
