Byredo has launched a new tobacco in the same fortnight its last one ran out.
Havana Tonka is the newest Night Veils extrait, on byredo.com since 2 October and in stock there in seven markets: €340, £310 or $465 for 70 ml. Bergamot, rum and crème brûlée on top; tobacco leaf, violet and white suede in the heart; roasted tonka, patchouli and benzoin underneath. As usual with the house, no perfumer is named anywhere Byredo publishes. The tobacco that came before it in the line is Tobacco Mandarin, which left byredo.com without a word in July and has lived on boutique stock since. That stock has now run dry. Niche Gallery in Dubai, the one shop that kept turning up a 50 ml, is out again, and Escentials in Singapore has taken its page down. What is left is The Perfumed Court's decants, up to 3 ml.
Byredo's other launch this fortnight is one most of us cannot buy. 00:00 is Fanny Bal's musk for Greater China only: HK$1,720 for 50 ml at the Gough Street flagship, K11 MUSEA and Lane Crawford, and absent from byredo.com in Europe and the US. Her brief to herself was a freshness that actually lasts.
Then two British houses, using the same name for the same idea. Roja and Miller Harris each keep a shelf called The Archive, and both use it for farewells. Roja describes its own as an edit of fragrances marking "a final chapter", and has moved Parfum de la Nuit 1 onto it, still on sale at £995 for 100 ml of parfum. When I looked this morning the shelf held five more: NüWa, Scandal Pour Homme, and three Pour Femmes, Reckless, Scandal and Danger. Miller Harris calls its shelf "discontinued but well-loved fragrances", released in small batches until they run out, and L'Eau Magnetic is now sold nowhere else on the house's site: a 50 ml at £95, and a 100 ml tester in the retired packaging at £140. Neither house has announced anything. The shelf is the announcement.
A third house has finished the job. Penhaligon's has nothing left under Halfeti Cedar in any market. The 5 ml that lingered on the British and European sites is gone, and so is the American landing page, while the original Halfeti stays on sale everywhere. One 100 ml is still listed in Dubai.
